I am currently a member of the Green Life Organization. My goal is to promote recycling on the USI campus. Recycling is a very good thing for the environment. We should all recycle because it makes the Earth better for not only us, but for our kids and future generations as well. There are many places on campus where you can recycle. Most of the recycling bins are right next to the dumpsters so when you do take your trash to the dumpster you can just recycle it on the way.
A couple of good reasons I think why people should recycle are because it is good for the economy, it reduces waste, it’s good for the environment, it reduces the amount of garbage that gets put into the landfill, and it saves energy. It is also a cost effective process. It will save us money in the long run, because we will be reusing items that we would usually just throw away. It also reduces on the world overall pollution issues.
When you recycle, you are not throwing things that cannot decompose in the landfills and will be there forever. They can melt or press the materials down and re makes them into new products. It will cut down on supply of the material such as plastic, glass, rubber, etc. Recycling will also help the global warming issues. It can reduce the number of greenhouse gases that are put off by the non-decomposing materials, making the air we breathe cleaner, the water more pure, and the soil that we plant crops and plants in less chemically altered. It also makes the locations look cleaner and more appealing. More people will want to go to a place that is clean and safe for their families to play and have picnics, because people don't want to go someplace that has bottles and plastic wrappers laying all over the ground.
There are also a lot of negative things that could happen if you didn't recycle. Water could become contaminated and it wouldn't be as safe to drink. Also, it would affect the fish in the water. With them being in the water that's contaminated, them and their eggs they lay themselves would become contaminated, and when the eggs hatch, they will have genetic defects or extra bacteria that could affect everything.
It would also affect the land we plant our crops and trees in. If the ground and soil got too contaminated with materials, it could get to the point that we could not grow crops and food for ourselves and other people. That would also affect the air quality, because without the ability to plant trees, more carbon dioxide that is given off we wouldn't be able to manage that with the planting of more trees.
Also, that would affect global warming and the greenhouse effect. The more greenhouse gases we get trapped inside our atmosphere from the decaying and non-degradable materials, the larger the holes in our ozone layer will get. That will allow higher temperatures and more unsafe UV rays to be allowed to get to the Earth's surface. That would in effect cause the polar icecaps to melt faster and more drastic weather and climate changes.
Many people do recycle, but it would be great if we could get even more people to recycle. What some people do not know is that water bottles can be recycled and be made into shirts, carpets, blankets, scarf’s, hats, mittens, and bags. I feel like if more people were aware of how many things could easily be recycled and if they knew all the facts I think they would choose to help out a lot more.
I think this is a great start on getting our point across on recycling. If everyone could just get involved and just recycle some papers, water bottles, and cans it would be a great start into helping our campus and Evansville as a whole.
